Three doors were planned in the original design of the Cathedral, created in the early 12th century: the Main Door (at the centre of the façade), the so-called Door of the Fish Shop (on the Cathedral northern flank near the Ghirlandina Tower) and the Baptism Door, also known as the Princes’ Door (on the southern flank towards the square). They share similar characteristics: the same architectural structure and dense figurative and symbolic depictions, which convey numerous messages intertwined in a single narration. Ancient prophets, the first apostles, farmers, artisans, Arthurian knights, real and fantastic beasts and rich vegetation inhabit these portals and attract the faithful as they enter or exit the Cathedral. In the background, there is the mysterious and shining statement of Jesus Christ: “I am the Door”.

I think that the best part of visiting a place is the knowledge of the history hidden behind it. I find extremely fascinating the fact that, after having read this book, when I look at the doors of the Cathedral I am aware of knowing something more than the other visitors. Something that needs to be known and worthy sharing. Needless to say, I recommend you to buy it.

libro pieno di cultura ( che non è mai abbastanza ). sono felice che abbiano fatto anche la versione inglese. mi sono allenata e ho approfondito il mio livello linguistico. perfetto!
